mobile word lab: accepting applications
Through meaningful contexts like gardening, songwriting, cooking and science fiction, readers and writers develop literacy skills and a love of language.
Students become word scientists by investigating patterns in orthography (how words look), phonology (how words sound), and vocabulary (what words mean). HOW? English spelling is based on meaning but this important connection is often overlooked - consider the “silent g” in sign. It's not "irregular" or "stupid" - it signals a connection to related words like signature, signify, even significant. Instead of memorizing endless “sight words,” word scientists discover relationships between word meanings and spellings. Learn more about this approach from Word Works Kingston, or Beyond the Word for the early grades. |
